Businesses Can Now Deduct the Full Cost of Fire Alarm Systems

The 2017 passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provides a new incentive for businesses to invest in building improvements and purchase new equipment. The new tax law, H.R.1., has expanded the scope of Section 179. This is the part of the tax code that allows businesses, in some cases, to deduct the entire expense for equipment placed in service that year instead of taking much smaller deductions for depreciation over many years. This expanded tax deduction encourages companies to continue investing in their businesses and places additional items under Section 179.

As of 2018, companies received a new incentive for investing in their alarm and fire protection systems. They can now deduct the full cost of investing in these systems in the same year they are placed into service up to $1 million. This deduction does not begin to phase out until the business has reached $2.5 million in qualifying purchases.

If your current fire alarm and/or security systems are getting old or are causing problems for you and your tenants with false alarms, this may be the perfect time to plan to upgrade your system this year or next.*
