Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas produced by combustion. Carbon monoxide detectors, also known as CO detectors, are devices “having a sensor that responds to carbon monoxide gas that is connected to an alarm control unit.” NFPA 720

New York and the New York City building code (Section 1. Article 315 of chapter 3 of title 28) will start requiring carbon monoxide detectors in commercial spaces by January 1, 2021.
